Sustainability and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in VET
Sustainability is a complex concept with various interpretations. While definitions may differ, there’s a broad consensus that sustainability is relevant to all aspects of work and daily life, necessitating its integration into all educational areas.
As an EU partnership, we refer to the EU Reference Framework for Green Competences (GreenComp), which defines sustainability as:
“Prioritising the needs of all life forms and of the planet by ensuring that human activity does not exceed planetary boundaries.”
The EU GreenComp framework identifies a set of competences for sustainability that can be integrated into educational programs, helping learners develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for sustainable practices.

The European Union emphasizes Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in its policies, aiming to equip people with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to protect the planet and advance the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Sustainability in Vocational Education and Training (VET)
VET plays a crucial role in ESD by integrating sustainability principles into educational programs. This prepares future professionals to think and act sustainably across various sectors, fostering environmental responsibility and promoting sustainable practices within organizations.
